THE STORY PLOT: Based on a novella by Stephen King, the worst electrical storm on record has a small coastal Maine town assessing the damages to their homes and businesses. Locals have flocked to the town's only grocery store to stock up on supplies while police, fire, and military personnel blanket the surrounding area. As a result of the storm, everything is out -- power, phones, and radios; the town is cut-off from the rest of the world. Oh, and the storm has also left behind an ominous mist that quickly shrouds the town, trapping those inside the grocery store when it appears that bloodthirsty, inhuman monsters are lurking outside.
Panic and confusion set off inside the store over what to do next. Three distinct groups begin to emerge: 1) those that want to find a safe means to escape, led by painter and family man David Drayton (Thomas Jane); 2) those that choose not to believe there's anything evil in the mist, led by David's neighbor, Brent Norton (Andre Braugher); and 3) those that embrace the chaos, believing the world is coming to an end, led by the religious zealot Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden).
With the emergence of these groups, The Mist transcends normal horror movie conventions and becomes an enlightening study of religion, class, and human nature in the face of tragedy. People once friends and neighbors suddenly become enemies because of the group they've chosen. David and the maintenance crew clash over how to fix the store's backup generator. David insists that the crew shouldn't risk their safety by going onto the store's roof to fix it, but the crew proceeds because only they (and not David) have the skills and training to make the right decisions.
Later, Brent and David clash when a bloodied David tries to describe the abominable creature with sharp tentacles that attacked the maintenance crew as they tried to fix the generator. Brent believes David fabricated the story as retaliation for a lawsuit Brent filed against him several months back. All the while, the insufferable Mrs. Carmody is gaining support amongst the scared with her doomsday preaching and calls for expiation and human sacrifice of those whom she believes are at fault.
Initially a safe haven from the threat outside, the grocery store then becomes a bigger liability. Writer-director Frank Darabont does a tremendous job building and sustaining the suspense both inside and outside the store. The monsters lurk quietly in the mist, never totally visible until Darabont decides to thrust an attack upon us at the most unanticipated moments. Once the immediate threat from the mist has subsided, and before the next one arrives, Darabont turns on the tension within the store as the forces battle over complex societal issues and right approach to dealing with the situation.
For The Mist, the monsters are only a small part of the larger supporting cast. Although never fully exposed or explained, Darabont's terrifying creatures can best be described as flies, spiders, and other inserts on steroids -- 10 times their normal size, with razor sharp teeth and penetrating claws. As the hero, Thomas Jane is a believable everyman with whom we can all identify. He's not overly strong or domineering; he just wants to do the right thing for his family and others. The most frightening character of all may be Harden, whose self-righteous, apocalyptic cries for atonement are more piercing and menacing than the savage flesh eating beasts of the mist.
The DVD includes commentary from Darabont, deleted scenes, and numerous making-of featurettes. A second DVD includes the version of the film which Darabont wanted most: The same movie, but in black and white.
QUOTING JOSH TYLER: If there’s any flaw in the film, it’s in some of the specifics of the Darabont’s script which at times, leans towards the predictable. But like everything Darabont does The Mist connects with its audience on such a deeply emotional level that those trifling problems are easily overcome. The film’s monster movie elements are there only to serve as a catalyst for a much deeper, brutally emotive, thought-provoking story. This is a brilliantly smart, character-driven horror film; and it’ll rock you to the core.

"QUOTING JACOB SANTOS"
Here, Alex is a hockey-playing female who agrees to aid the world championship-caliber Zack in his quest to qualify, even after he contributes to the ankle-shattering of his ex-lover/partner Celeste. The catch here (beyond the gender reversal) is that Alex has herself dreamed of figure skating success since she was a child, but her parents were too poor for her to continue. The poignant moment in our set-up for emotional attachment occurs when Alex's mother reveals that she rescued her childhood skates from the trash, and stood outside Alex's bedroom as she mourned the loss of her skating dream growing up. Here, mother and daughter bond, and the movie provides its inspirational push.
When Zack's former coach and Celeste sell him out for greater competition and other relationships, the deck is stacked against the professional and the waitress-hockey player couple. Of course, a third place team gets disqualified for drug use to qualify the unqualified duo for the championships&ellips; but you have to expect that in light of the premise and the third-time's-the-charm redux.
The Cutting Edge: Chasing the Dream is one of those movies that critics hate, but preadolescents with unfulfilled dreams will love, and so will many of their parents. The movie is cheesy, predictable, and absolutely dull for those who can't stand movies like this and/or hate ice skating. But that's not who the movie aims to please, and in knowing it's audience, it succeeds.
The lone "twist" comes when Zack finally sees the championship in terms of Alex's happiness rather than in terms of winning. I'd probably argue that he has cared more about others than himself throughout, although he has been tagged "dangerous" and injures not one, but two, partners. Strangely, in the end, the credits roll with the duo's final skate over and no score. They did skate for the love of the game, with no prize achieved but their own desire to compete.
Life puts scores on all of us, and trades away our dreams for the world's vision of success. The second sequel to the once-funny flick reminds us again that dreams come in all shapes and sizes, and denying our call to use our gifts only makes us grumpy, and ill-fitted to our lives. The film succeeds because it follows its own call to inspire, skate, and dream.
...."MY OWN REVIEW" --- first, ZACK CONROY is hot!!!!!! hahaha...well, the movie iS pretty much a remake of the original cutting edge...of courSe there's juSt a few twickS in the Story, like now the hockey Player iS the girl, wherein from the original, we all know it's Doug Dorsey - the leading man...it waS like everything waS done in reverSe...but they did a good move by Putting in the character of Jackie DorSey (the daughter of Part 1'S original duo)...and of courSe, it wouldn't be comPlete without the famouS execution of the Pamchenco twiSt..although i enjoyed watching them do the Pamchenco twiSt and i muSt Say it waS great, for me, nothing beatS the original (that being the Pamchenco twiSt in Part 1)...but overall, the movie waS great, funny (bcoz of Alex's brother) and i do recommend it for everyone to watch...
three words to end my review --- "HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF" | Category: | Movies | | Genre: | Other |
---QUOTING NEW YOUR TIMES" “Step Up 2 the Streets” is an earnest sequel to the 2006 cornball musical drama “Step Up,” mixing new characters into the original’s setting, the neighborhoods surrounding the Maryland School of the Arts in Baltimore.
Like its predecessor, this follow-up takes place in a gritty neighborhood, has a white lead, posits a universe where racial and class differences are minor obstacles to fun and pretends its clichés aren’t clichés.
The heroine of this one is Andie (Briana Evigan), an orphaned girl and a member of the 410, a notorious crew that stages musical pranks in public places and competes in dance contests at a club called the Streets. Andie auditions for admission to the school and gets in on the good word of its star dancer, the handsome, blond Chase (Robert Hoffman), who saw her dance at the club. Andie’s commitment to her new school gets her kicked out of her old crew, but no matter. She forms a new crew with Chase, who fantasizes about winning the grand prize in a contest at the Streets.
When Andie and Chase, both of whom are white, hold forth on the values of the Streets and barge into the club demanding that its mostly nonwhite patrons give them respect and a shot at the title, the movie is writing socially aware checks that its trite, fake-inspirational story can’t cash. This willfully clueless attitude about race and class — factors examined in the recent, vastly superior “How She Move” — is irritating.
But there are saving graces, notably exuberant musical sequences (the best of which depicts couples salsa-dancing at a backyard barbecue) and a likable supporting cast, including Adam G. Sevani as Moose, a diminutive, goofy but preternaturally confident dancer who might be the baddest nerd in movie history.
---MY OWN REVIEW--- two words:::: "LOVE IT!!!" | Category: | Movies | | Genre: | Science Fiction & Fantasy |
*i've watched this over the weekend*
(from USA today)
Smith plays Robert Neville, a scientist still working to reverse the incurable man-made virus that wiped out the population. Because he is immune to the virus, he becomes the last man standing in New York. Seeing such a vibrant city become a ghost town is almost worth the price of admission.
After the outbreak, Neville is left with only the company of his beloved German shepherd and sad memories of his wife and child. But, even in this seemingly deserted metropolis, he's not truly alone. Undead mutant creatures are lurking nearby. Though he outwits them for a while, they eventually come to torment Neville and try to devour him.
But because of the been-there, done-that quality of zombie movies and the poor quality of the computer-generated imagery, his faceoffs with them are not scary or suspenseful. The rampaging zombies don't look at all convincing. Instead, they look like escapees from a second-rate video game.
Smith's physical transformation is awe-inspiring. He got in peak shape and lost 20 pounds for the role. And in the midst of the grim reality of his isolation, he makes desperate efforts to tap into his humanity. His strong comic sense is well used here. The close relationship with his dog is altogether believable and touching.
Smith is one of the few actors who can seem personable while muttering to himself or talking to his dog.
But his powerful performance is not enough to save the movie — initially a potent meditation on loneliness and an absorbing doomsday action movie — from taking a wrong turn and never getting back on track.
So, on the strength of his performance and an intriguing apocalyptic story, the first half of I Am Legend is fascinating and fun to watch.
But a little more than halfway in, Legend, based on the book by Richard Matheson (which also spawned 1971's Omega Man and 1964's TheLast Man on Earth), deteriorates into a schlocky zombie horror flick and loses its steam. | Category: | Movies | | Genre: | Drama |
When Ted Crawford discovers that his beautiful younger wife, Jennifer, is having an affair, he plans her murder--the perfect murder. Among the cops arriving at the crime scene is hostage negotiator Detective Rob Nunally, the only officer permitted entry to the house. Surprisingly, Crawford readily admits to shooting his wife, but Nunally is too stunned to pay close attention when he recognizes his lover, whose true identity he never knew, lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Although Jennifer was shot at point blank range, Nunally realizes she isn't dead. Crawford is immediately arrested and arraigned after confessing--a seemingly slam-dunk case for hot shot assistant district attorney Willy Beachum, who has one foot out the door of the District Attorney's office on his way to a lucrative job in high-stakes corporate law. But nothing is as simple as it seems, including this case. Will the lure of power and a love affair with a sexy, ambitious attorney at his new firm overpower Willy's fierce drive to win, or worse, quash his code of ethics? In a tense duel of intellect and strategy, Crawford and Willy both learn that a "fracture" can be found in every ostensibly perfect faade.
